Dear President of International Olympic Academy,
Dear President of Federation of Olympia,
Dear distinguished authorities,
dear friends,
This is really a unique privilege for me as CISM President and as a member of International Olympic
Committee Commission of “Olympic Truce Foundation” to be here in the holly wider area of Ancient Olympia in order to express my endless appreciation of this great ceremony dedicated to “Olympic Truce or Ekecheiria”.
Dear distinguished authorities, dear friends, the Olympic Truce established in order to declare the values of tolerance, solidarity and peace through sports during the Olympic Games because sport is in a unique tool that promote the spirit of the Olympic Truce into real practice.
Sport is the only area of human performance that has achieved to become universal value and has the endless massive acceptance.
Sport is the only implementation tool that always create bridges all over the world by neutrality, respect and equality regardless of race, gender, social status, cultural background, faith or belief and political belief.
Sport is the only fundamental principle of non-discrimination that allows the promotion of peace in the world in the same way with the Ancient Greeks 3.000 years ago when they stopped fighting and started competing in sports.
In the same way, CISM establishes as well the peace in the world through hundred competitions every year and mainly through CISM Military World Games once in four years when 8.000 military athletes of 134 United Nations countries compete for Sport and Peace. CISM plays one leader role by launching the most explicit and spectacular message of peace to the whole world under the motto ‘’ Friendship through Sport’’. The soldiers that were fighting 75 years ago, now they are competing all together for the peace.
As a result, dear Mayor of Municipality of Ilida, this is the meaning of this great ceremony which is the representation of our military athletes who leave the guns down -as 3000 years ago - and symbolically are ready to compete in sports under the principle of Olympic Truce or Ekecheiria.
Dear distinguished guests, today we have the honour to have 1 athlete of Palestine among the athletes that stopped fighting and they are ready to compete.
Concluding, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Greece that in practice has offered since last year tremendous assistance and solidarity to refugees of war and post conflict areas. Greece is real symbol of hope for all the refugees in our world and will makes the world better during this human crisis.
